Different from other kinds of art mediums such as paintings, films, or books, architecture has its own life. When the construction of a building is completed, It doesn’t mean everything is finished. On the contrary, the life of architecture just starts. The building will be used by hundreds or thousands of people every day and tons of activities will happen in it.

—— < Capture the intangible memories of architecture>

Bror Hjorths Hus

Bror Hjorth is regarded as one of the great modernists in Swedish art.

Bror Hjorth (1894-1968) is regarded as one of the great modernists in Swedish art. He was both a sculptor and a painter and became a professor in drawing. His art is a tribute to love, music and life.

Bror Hjorths Hus is a studio museum located in Uppsala, Sweden, housed in the artist Bror Hjorth’s former home and studio. I was captivated by the artistic and vivid atmosphere of this building, even more than 50 years after his death. So, I decided to select it as the location for my diploma project.

Digital Art Pedagogy

Build an online virtual museum, greeting people worldwide

During the pandemic, access to the location is restricted, leading Bror Hjorths Hus to provide digital art pedagogy to showcase his remarkable works to interested individuals. Even outside of pandemic times, Uppsala, a small city in Sweden, isn't particularly visitor-friendly, but it's unfortunate to miss out on such exceptional artworks.

This spurred my consideration of building an online virtual museum, granting people worldwide the opportunity to immerse themselves in his creations regardless of geographical barriers.

Photogrammetry

Construct 3D models of his sculptures, paintings, and studio

Bror Hjorth drew inspiration from Egyptian art, and his paintings possess a unique depth, not merely flat surfaces. To digitally collect and showcase his artworks, I employed photogrammetry to construct 3D models of both his sculptures and paintings.

Meta Quest

Build VR Museum in Unity for Meta Quest

Situated within the landscape, the museum's spatial arrangement draws inspiration from Egyptian temples. Leveraging Unity, I designed and rendered the space, seamlessly integrating Meta Quest 2 to deliver an immersive VR experience through the headset.

Upon arrival, visitors receive instructions at the outset of their journey. Beginning from the entrance hall, they traverse through the sculpture hall and culminate their tour in the painting hall, where materials and background sounds are authentically sourced from the original buildings. Leveraging technology, visitors enjoy enhanced interaction, enabling them to select and explore descriptions to delve deeper into the life and works of Bror Hjorth.

Conclusion

Digital preservation and public access

This project designed a virtual reality museum showcasing the celebrated works of Swedish artist Bror Hjorth. Seamlessly blending elements from his historic residence in Uppsala, the VR museum offers a unique opportunity for individuals worldwide to immerse themselves in the masterpieces of this esteemed artist.

“The environments are much cleaner than before. Plaster dust, clay residue, newspapers, and containers for cleaning brushes are gone. The smell of oil, turpentine, and wet mud is gone. And the artworks are also not always the same or sitting in the same place as when Bror died.”
